Take a Ride Into the Past
Hop on the Walt Disney World Railroad and ride it to Frontierland. You can pick it up right beyond the Magic Kingdom entrance, at the start of Main Street.
There’s also a station in Fantasyland, at the back of Storybook Circus.
If you ride from Main Street, your first stop will be Frontierland. For a more leisurely experience and a complete ride around the park, stay on for a loop. You’ll end up back at Main Street, but you don’t have to get off — you can stay on until Frontierland.
Have an Old West-Style Competition
Once you disembark the WDW Railroad in Frontierland, head to the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade. 🎯
Challenge each other to hit the most targets in 5 minutes. This Old West-themed shooting gallery has around 100 to choose from.
The loser has to buy the winner a snack from the Westward Ho food stand.
Fuel Up (and Maybe Cool Off)
Depending on when you’re there, the Westward Ho quick-service stand will be serving breakfast or snacks.
For breakfast, you can get a biscuit sandwich with fried chicken, egg and your choice of cheese. They also serve cinnamon-sugar donut holes in the morning. 😋
From lunchtime on, order snacks like the candied bacon skewer or jalapeno poppers.
And no matter when you go, you can order Joffrey’s Cold Brew and add caramel, hazelnut or vanilla flavor. The stand also has slushies for extra-hot Florida days.
Time for a New Adventure
Frontierland is right next to Adventureland, and that’s where you’ll head next.
About midway down the main Adventureland walkway is the Swiss Family Treehouse. There’s rarely a wait, and there’s lots to see. Plus, since you can go at your own pace, you can spend as long as you want looking at the details.
Exotic Magic Kingdom Dining — and Delish Cocktails
Magic Kingdom doesn’t have a ton of sit-down dining options, but one of our favorites is definitely Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen.
The menu is on the exotic side, as are your surroundings. And the wait staff is as good as you’d hope Disney servers would be — which is saying they’re wonderful.
For added romance, ask to sit at the butterfly table if it’s available. The curved booth lets you sit close to one another, and the butterfly-adorned alcove adds a bit of privacy.
We also ordered off the “secret” menu, which wasn’t listed anywhere but our server told us about.
💡 You’ll want to make your Magic Kingdom dining reservations in advance. We have an article that shows you exactly how to do that — see it here.
😬 Didn’t get a chance to book your table ahead of time? Reservations tend to open up the night before or the day of as people change their plans. You can also check at the host stand to see if there’s a walk-up list.
Head to a Post-Dinner Show
To cap off your Disney date, take in an after-dinner show at Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, which is right nearby. This is also an opportunity to digest before you’re on your feet again to trek through the park.
FAQ About a One-Day Magic Kingdom Itinerary
How much time do you need at Magic Kingdom park?
How much time you need at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World depends on a few things, like how often you’ve been there and if you plan to go again; how many Magic Kingdom days you have during your Disney World vacation; and which Magic Kingdom attractions you’re most interested in. The time of year, time of day and day of the week can also affect your decision.
Magic Kingdom is Disney World’s most popular theme park. If booking a Walt Disney World vacation is a regular thing for you, one or two days at MK may be fine. But if you’ve never been to WDW before — especially if you plan on only visiting once or you don’t know when you’ll be back — 2-3 days is a safer bet to feel like you’ve seen plenty.
It’ll also be difficult to get a lot done if you’re traveling during a busy time of year or heading to Magic Kingdom on the weekend. And if you’re primarily interested in the most popular rides, then you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time and/or rely on Genie Plus and Lightning Lanes to get a lot done.
⏰ Also, pay attention to Magic Kingdom’s park hours. Some days, the park is open well into the night. Other times, especially if a ticketed evening event is scheduled, it’ll close early. For example, we’ve seen the park close as early as 4:30 p.m. for a special event.
Find out when that day’s park closing time is so you can accomplish (most) everything you want or head to another of the Disney World theme parks that’ll be open later.
Does Magic Kingdom take a whole day?
Yes, visiting Magic Kingdom will take the whole day if all you have is one day to complete your trip’s Magic Kingdom itinerary.
But if you have more time during your Disney vacation to visit Magic Kingdom, then you can spend a full day or a partial day at MK without worrying about missing out. When you’re done, you can head back to the hotel or hop to another of the Disney parks.
That said, if you’re worried about filling your time, don’t be. There’s so much to do, see, eat, buy and experience when visiting Magic Kingdom that you won’t have a hard time spending an entire day there. In fact, we think it’d be pretty difficult to see everything MK has to offer even during an extended vacation. Trust us — we tried.
What rides should I go on first at Magic Kingdom?
The rides that you should go on first at Magic Kingdom depend on what you’re most interested in doing, as well as how you want your Disney park day to feel.
For example, most guests who rope drop will head to the most popular rides first, like any of the roller coasters, Haunted Mansion, or the more popular Fantasyland rides, like Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
But if you want to rope drop so you can experience the park semi-empty before the crowds come, you may want to plan a different type of Magic Kingdom itinerary. And the same can be said for you late arrivers, like us. Some days, we opt to go on anything that isn’t popular with most guests. (Here’s what those days look like.)
Magic Kingdom Itinerary Wrap-Up
The Magic Kingdom is rarely a one-day park unless you travel to Disney World often and know you’ll see it again soon. But when you approach your one-day-only time at MK wisely, you can get a lot done in half the day or less by selecting the attractions that don’t get bombarded with crowds.
